I’m Ali, and I’m a surface pattern designer from rural Northamptonshire, England. I like to describe myself as a curious person, with a passion for colour and design, and I love creating happy, colourful work that makes people smile.
After graduating with a First Class Honours Degree in Printed Textiles from Derby University, I started work as a lecturer teaching visual studies to interior design students and freelancing as a surface pattern designer creating hand painted work for the home decor and stationery markets. I also have experience in the manufacturing of glass and ceramic transfers for companies such as Royal Worcester and Denby.
After taking a career break to have a family, I returned to the industry I love. Pattern design is a real obsession, and I’ve done many online courses and watched countless tutorials to feed my passion. My design process starts with an inky drawing, painting or cut paper before finishing off the final design digitally in either Illustrator or Photoshop.
When I’m not designing, you can find me hanging out with my family and knitting colourful socks (another obsession!).
I have designed patterns and illustrations for a wide range of markets including greeting cards, home textiles, fabric and children’s products. Clients include, but not limited to: Dashwood Studio, The Gift Wrap Co, Hobby Lobby, Paper Rose, CCA Occasions and Fisher Price.
